Waterfront Regeneration Trust wins American Trails AwardToronto, Ontario – October 16, 2007 – The Waterfront Regeneration Trust is proud to announce that the Waterfront Trail website, www.waterfronttrail.org, was selected as the winner of the “Best Site for Kids and Families” in the American Trails Website Contest. Winners were selected in categories that highlight the wide variety of special features and creative promotion of trails and greenways on the Internet. The Waterfront Trail site was the only Canadian site to be recognized by the prestigious organization. The Waterfront Trail is a signed 650km recreational route that stretches along the Canadian shores of Lake Ontario and the Ontario shores of the St. Lawrence River. Along with maps, event listings, and tourism information, the website also features two new tools aimed at families and children, the Taste of the Trail Starter’s Kits and the Great Waterfront Trail Adventure. “These new resources give people the information they need to use the Trail for more than their fitness and recreation needs. The Trail is increasing being used as a green transportation alternative to get to work and even as a great week-end get-away,” said Marlaine Koehler, executive director of the Waterfront Regeneration Trust. The Starter’s Kits provide suggestions for 8 separate family-friendly day trips along the Waterfront Trail, including maps and itineraries for walkers, cyclists, and bladers looking for adventure in St. Catharine’s, Hamilton-Burlington, Mississauga, Port Union, Oshawa-Whitby, Port Hope, Gananoque, and Cornwall. The Great Waterfront Trail Adventure features an interactive map designed to introduce kids to what the Waterfront Trail has to offer, including fishing, scuba diving, historical sites, and beaches, to name a few of the exciting activities waiting to be explored on the Trail.
