FEATURED ROUTE – Prince Edward County

Prince Edward County gets rave reviews by Waterfront Trail users who roll through area. A bending and curving shoreline, vast marshes and wetlands, and the largest freshwater dune system in the world at Sandbanks, are just some of the natural treasures you will enjoy in the County.

The Waterfront Trail meanders around the countryside and a 57.3 km route is featured here. Starting in the town of Picton, follow the Waterfront Trail east along route 33 to route 7. Pedal along route 7 to route 8 which will circle you back to Picton and route 33.

FEATURED ATTRACTION – Toronto Music Garden

The Toronto Music Garden was designed by internationally renowned cellist Yo Yo Ma and landscape designer Julie Moir Messervy, as a reflection of Bach’s Fist Suite for Unaccompanied Cello. A treasure along Toronto’s waterfront, this season’s calendar features an array of exotic sounds with the focus being “generations”. Tours of the garden are offered through the Harbourfront Centre and a schedule may be found here: http://www.harbourfrontcentre.com/noflash/perfarts/musicgarden.php.

SCUBA DIVING

Did you know that Kingston and the 1000 Islands is a mecca for scuba diving? There are schooners, paddle wheeler, and a steam powered dredge, to name a few. Several companies offer tours for divers of all abilities and their web-sites have pictures and stories for the history buff. Log on to http://www.waterfronttrail.org/GWTA_Scuba.html for more information.

TRAIL TALE by Vic Gedris

Members of the Toronto Human Powered Vehicle Club and their friends spent a perfect July weekend camping at Darlington Provincial Park and riding the Waterfront Trail between Toronto and Port Hope. Most of us took the GO train to Oshawa after work on Friday evening and rode to the campground. On Saturday we spent the day riding about 100km to Port Hope and back, and then rode back to Toronto on Sunday. It's a really convenient and fun weekend getaway from the city. Just need a bike, some camping gear, and a few bucks for camping fees and train tickets!

WARNING: The information and suggestions in this newsletter have been developed to assist Trail users in planning both their recreational and commuting trips along the Waterfront Trail. It mentions signed routes of the Trail, as well as possible routes and connections in areas where routes have not yet been designated as part of the Waterfront Trail. The possible routes and connections have been identified in consultation with the municipalities and Conservation Authorities of Lake Ontario and from Trail users. Some of these possible routes and connections may not be ideal for cycling, in-line skating, or hiking. They may be unsuitable for some Trail users because of the close proximity to vehicular traffic or unsuitable trail surface. Whenever possible, indicators have been placed on the maps to warn of caution areas. However, be prepared to make your own evaluation of traffic, trail and road conditions, and plan routes appropriate to your riding, in line skating, and hiking skills and your comfort level. This newsletter is not intended as a guide for children.
