GWTA UPDATES: JUST OVER 30 DAYS TO GO...TWO BIG ANNOUNCEMENTS!

We are down to the final weeks before the big ride. As the final round of community meetings wrap up next week, we will be posting all of the details for the daily events along the route, and will be sending out a checklist for all riders to review before arrival on the 3rd/4th. With that said we are pleased to make a couple of announcements that have just been finalized:

Shuttles home from Riviere-Beaudette:

There are now a couple of options for all participants to return to either Toronto or NOTL post event on the 11th of July.
Option #1: Charter bus from Cornwall/Rivierre Beaudette to Toronto (one location drop TBD)
$100 pp with bike transfer included (separate truck)
Option #2: Charter bus from Cornwall/Riviere Beaudette to Niagara-on-the-Lake long term parking area at the Pillar & Post.
$120 pp with bike transfer included (separate truck)
Both of these options require a minimum of 32 people to make it go, with a maximum of 56 people per bus. To sign up for one of these two options please fill out the form for transportation registration:

For those who are planning on using the long term parking in NOTL, please contact Avery at ao@wrtrust.com.

Concert in the Fort July 3rd:

As part of the kick-off for the event this year we are extremely excited to be welcomed the night before the official July 4th launch by Historic Fort George, with the ability to camp inside the walls, as well as stay in the barracks. As part of the July 3rd pre-launch celebrations inside the Fort this year, we are thrilled by the partnership with Venifest the 1st World Music Festival in NOTL featuring Juno nominated band Kobo Town, along with Steam Whistle Brewery at Sunset. For anyone who has seen this band live, you know the energy they bring. Tickets go on sale to the general public next week, but are included for all GWTA participants.

FLIGHT OF THE SHOREBIRDS AT PRESQU’ILE PROVINCIAL PARK, BRIGHTON

From the (NHE) & Friends of Presqu’ile:

We had some excitement here last week with huge numbers of shorebirds on the beach. According to our new Dune and Beach Management Plan we restricted access to the beach to minimize disturbance to these birds on these days. For more information please see the official Ontario Parks blog at http://www.parkreports.com/parksblog/?p=155
A more complete story can be found on the Friends of Presqu’ile website at http://www.friendsofpresquile.on.ca/ and click “grounding” under “Recent News”.

OTHER GREAT TRAILS OF THE WORLD: ACROSS THE US ON A HIWHEEL...

A little different spin on “Other” Trails of the World this time around...on a recent trip to Northern California I had the pleasure of passing one of the most amazing feats of cycling I have ever seen. We immediately stopped and turned around to grab a photo of a gentleman by the name of Martin Krieg, who was navigating the climbs enroute to Lake Tahoe...on a Penny Farthing. For anyone who doesn’t know what a Penny Farthing or HiWheel is, it is bicycle built in the late Victorian era with a large wheel in the front, tiny wheel in the back, and is highly unstable. With a few modifications Martin was making his way from San Francisco to Boston to promote a National Bicycling Greenway in the US. Here is his website with more details about his journey, his story and the reason for the ride. Very interesting to say the least...

WARNING: The information and suggestions in this newsletter have been developed to assist Trail users in planning both their recreational and commuting trips along the Waterfront Trail. It mentions signed routes of the Trail, as well as possible routes and connections in areas where routes have not yet been designated as part of the Waterfront Trail. The possible routes and connections have been identified in consultation with the municipalities and Conservation Authorities of Lake Ontario and from Trail users. Some of these possible routes and connections may not be ideal for cycling, in-line skating, or hiking. They may be unsuitable for some Trail users because of the close proximity to vehicular traffic or unsuitable trail surface. Whenever possible, indicators have been placed on the maps to warn of caution areas. However, be prepared to make your own evaluation of traffic, trail and road conditions, and plan routes appropriate to your riding, in line skating, and hiking skills and your comfort level. This newsletter is not intended as a guide for children.
