The Heart and Stroke Foundation's response to the growing epidemic of childhood obesity.

This is an Ontario-wide initiative helping to inspire individuals, families, communities, businesses, industry and government to spark collective change – in how we live, how we act, and how we think – to ignite a brighter future for our children. The Waterfront Regeneration Trust has signed on to the Spark Promise to Our Children. We invite you to join us by visiting the link below.

Community Groups may apply to the Community Advocacy Fund for funds to promote and create sustainable physical activity and healthy eating opportunities in their own communities. The Trust is a 2008 recipient of Fund.

Food Guidelines for Caterers and Participants
Prepared by alPHa and Ontario Society of Nutrition Professional in Public Health

Meals make an impression! Last year the Trust received extensive comments from over 80 participants on the Great Waterfront Trail Adventure. While the meals were gratefully received by everyone, we learned that offering more vegetarian choices and a better variety of foods would go a long way to ensure the event is a showcase of local culinary bounty and a promotion of healthy, nutritious eating.

The Association of Local Public Health Agencies and members of the Ontario Society of Nutrition Professionals in Public Health have prepared nutrition guidelines for both cyclists and meal providers participating the Great Waterfront Trail Adventure. The guidelines will be available on our website and emailed to every participant to guide choices around meals and snacks.

Guidelines were prepared by the following Registered Dietitians and members of the Ontario Society of Nutrition Professionals in Public Health:
Adrienne Baltadjian, RD - Durham Region Health Department
Carole Chang, Leeds, RD - Grenville, and Lanark District Health Unit
Pat Elliott-Moyer, RD - City of Hamilton Public Health Services
Rita Foscarini, RD - York Region Community and Health Services
Jane Hammingh, RD - Ottawa Public Health
Dianne Oickle, RD - Leeds, Grenville, and Lanark District Health Unit
Sarah Tsang, RD - Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit

Deputation at Central Toronto Waterfront Executive Committee Meeting

The Waterfront Regeneration Trust will depute at the City of Toronto’s Executive Committee meeting this month to support the transformation of Queen Quay West into a grand waterfront boulevard by removing the existing south lanes of Queens Quay. Creating an impressive and landscaped promenade with space enough for all users of the Waterfront Trail is essential to realizing goals for Toronto’s waterfront. The concept for such a plan is well-documented in Royal Commission publications and Waterfront Toronto’s excellent proposal is the result of extensive consultations that have earned the concept strong community support.

OPPI Eastern Division

On May 21st, the Trust made a presentation to the Ontario Professional Planners Institute, Eastern Division at their meeting: A Path Forward: Town and Rural Planning Workshop. The Trust presented a brief background on the genesis of the Waterfront Trail, the next priorities for the Trail and the success of the Great Waterfront Trail Adventure to about 60 planners in attendance.

Cheers!
