Ontario Stewardship Rangers Go On Trail TourIn late July a group of 17 year old Ontario Stewardship Rangers from the Ministry of Natural Resources of Ontario (MNR) joined the Trust for a tour of the Waterfront Trail. As part of the educational component of the MNR program, the Rangers visited five projects along the Waterfront Trail meeting partners as well as developing an understanding of the Trail’s connection to the goal of regenerating the Lake Ontario Waterfront. The Rangers program offers youth work and educational experiences in key natural resource management activities while making a positive difference in their communities. The students work with various organizations in the greater GTA performing jobs that include habitat restoration and rehabilitation as well as resource related recreation development and support. Many of the Rangers expressed an interest in helping out with the Trail. Any volunteer groups or organizations needing volunteers for trail maintenance or trailblazing, tree plantings or any other hands-on projects is welcome to contact the Stewardship Rangers directly by contacting Paul Abell at 905-713-7401 or Paul.Abell@mnr.gov.on.ca. A Waterfront Trail Tale: A Summer’s Journey on the TrailThe summer is quickly coming to and end and we hope that you have all had a chance to venture out on the Trail to enjoy the warm sunny days. Our newest end-to-ender is Kathlene Willing who wrote in to tell us about her trip along the Trail that she completed over two summers. Kathlene has provided us with a chronicle of her adventures during her 2002 and 2003 summer trips. Over the next couple of months we will share with you the sections from her journal that we hope will inspire you to take on the end-to-end challenge. In this month’s section join Kathlene as she cycles with her colleague Winnie to complete the Niagara-on-the-Lake to Toronto section of the Trail. Read about how they traveled 149 kms over four days feasting on country style cooking in Queenstown, chatting with a fellow cyclist from Japan in Hamilton and spending their nights in quaint B&Bs along the Trail. Elena has worked hard throughout the summer updating our summer events listings as well as updating and creating new community profiles for our website. These community profiles will expand on the information currently available on the site with listings of Trail amenities for each Trail municipality including information on local marinas, attractions and parks. Thank you to the Labatt’s People In Action Program for making this project possible and to all of our waterfront partners for submitting their community information. Please submit any outstanding community profile feedback to Elena as soon as possible at info@wrtrust.com. Cheers!
